College Safety: How to Stay Safe When Living in BGSU Off-Campus Housing

by | Sep 8, 2022 | Student Housing Center

Living in BGSU off-campus housing affords college students many opportunities, but it also requires more responsibility. Here are some tips to stay safe while living in off-campus student apartments.

Staying Safe in The Apartment

Safety starts inside the apartment. When arriving home, lock the door and ask roommates to do the same. Also, pay attention to signs of suspicious activity, such as door or window tampering. Call the police and alert the complex’s security team right away.

Staying Safe Walking to the Car

Most student apartments have gated secured parking lots or covered parking. While gates can deter crime from the outside, they don’t prevent incidents between people inside the gates. As much as students think they know their neighbors and want to believe everyone has good intentions, that’s not always the case. Pay attention to the surroundings; if something doesn’t feel right, trust that feeling and leave the area or call for help immediately.

Staying Safe While Walking to Campus

An advantage of dedicated student housing off campus is that it’s usually within walking distance of campus. Walking to campus is great exercise and saves on parking fees and gas, but it can also be dangerous. There’s always safety in numbers. Walk to campus with a group, especially at night or when there aren’t many people around. Stay off the phone and pay attention to who’s in the area.

BGSU off-campus housing is relatively safe, but it never hurts to have a plan. For more housing information, check out Copper Beech at Bowling Green at https://copperbeech-bowlinggreen.com.
