How to Properly Store Wine and Liquor in Cabinets

by | Nov 2, 2018 | Wine Storage

Many people have a bottle of wine or liquor just tucked away in a pantry or the back of the freezer. Some of the bottles may be so old that you cannot remember when you bought it. Many times it has been sitting there for years only getting pulled out when it is time to clean the cabinets or freezer.

Many people think liquor will last forever, but it does not. However, there are ways of storing your alcohol in wine and liquor cabinets which can increase the shelf-life of the spirits. Most alcohol should be stored in a cool, dark area such as a wine and liquor cabinet and away from direct light.

Sherry and vermouth should be stored in a refrigerated cabinet, and they have been opened. The cold temperatures will slow down the oxidation process and keep it fresher longer.
White wines and rosé should be recorked and stored in a refrigerated wine and liquor cabinet after opening.

Vodka should be stored in a freezer or in a dark, cool cabinet away from direct light.

Unopened wine should be stored in a cool, dark cabinet on its side. This allows the cork to stay moist and not dry out.

Rum, whiskey, tequila, and gin should also be stored in a cool place after it has been opened. However, some people like to store their spirits between 55 to 60 degrees which allows them to last longer. As the temperature rises, the alcohol will expand and evaporate which can cause the flavor to change. Gin can be placed in the freezer for about an hour prior to serving to help make it smooth.

Most importantly, do not store your bottles in direct sunlight. Extended exposure to the sun can speed up the oxidation process which causes the spirit to lose its color and flavor.
